The Reserve project began in 2016, sparked by the insight of Jasmine De Marco, a biologist deeply committed to nature and environmental conservation.
Her observations along the Mesima river mouth highlighted the presence of rare and precious flora and fauna, alongside an ecosystem of immense ecological value that had previously been largely overlooked.
Thanks to the support of WWF Vibo Valentia – Vallata dello Stilaro and the commitment of Councilor Laghi, who formally proposed its establishment in the Regional Council, the initiative evolved into a shared institutional journey that led, in 2022, to the official recognition of the “Foce del Fiume Mesima” Regional Nature Reserve.
Today, the Reserve stands as a symbol of environmental and local rebirth, allowing the community to rediscover and celebrate its identity through the protection of its natural heritage.
The Mesima River flows through a rich and diverse landscape, creating ever-changing scenery: from coastal dunes to temporary ponds and bird-watching areas, every part of the Reserve has its own rhythm and history.

In accordance with the Regional Law establishing the Reserve, the “Mesima River Estuary” protects riverine, coastal, and marine ecosystems of particular value, promoting the conservation of the plant and animal species present, the sustainable use of the territory, and activities related to environmental education, scientific research, and ecological monitoring.
